The new Genghis Grill opening near Ohio State University isn’t just a first for Ohio, it’s a first for the brand. Two firsts, actually. The restaurant, scheduled to open June 23 at18 E. 15th Ave. on University Square, is both the first franchise for the Texas-based chain in 10 years and the first of a new fast-casual prototype design that will roll out to future locations.
Genghis Grill historically is a Mongolian stir-fry operation with customers picking ingredients that are then grilled on a flat stove. The new fast-casual model is a smaller footprint. Customers will order at a cashier counter or kiosk rather than assembling their own bowls. To-go orders are handled in a separate staging area.
Customers still pick their ingredients. The restaurant has more than 80 options that are grilled to order and can fit keto, gluten-free, low-carb, vegan and vegetarian options.
The goal is that customers order and enjoy their food and drink within 15 minutes .“This new location marks the first of its kind for our brand,” CEO Gregg Majewski said in a release. “It elevates convenience, providing increased speed and efficiencies in ordering and meal prep. ”
Speed and convenience are important given the proximity to Ohio State’s bustling population. So is value. Bowls start at $8.
The restaurant will have curbside pick-up spots for to-go orders as well as mobile ordering.
After Columbus, Genghis Grill will bring the new model to upcoming restaurants in Jackson, Mississippi and two in Reno, Nevada. The University Square restaurant is the first brick-and-mortar site in the state for the brand, though its menu has been available in the past through multiple ghost kitchen operations.
Genghis Gill has more than 50 restaurants across the country.
The restaurant was announced this year alongside several other new University Square additions including Smashburger and Dave’s Hot Chicken. Event space Vitria on the Square recently opened as well.
